How to Fake Your GPS Location on Android and iOS

Sometimes, turning off your GPS isn't enough. Perhaps you want to test a location-based app you are developing, play a location-based AR game without leaving your house, or access geo-restricted features on certain apps. In these cases, you might want to "spoof" or fake your GPS location.

Spoofing vs. VPNs

It's important to understand the difference between a VPN and GPS spoofing. A VPN changes your IP address, tricking websites into thinking you are in a different country. However, apps that ask for your precise location use your phone's GPS chip. A VPN will not change your GPS coordinates. For that, you need to spoof the GPS data.

How to Spoof GPS on Android

Android makes GPS spoofing relatively easy because it has built-in developer tools to allow it.

  1. Enable Developer Options: Go to Settings > About Phone. Tap the "Build Number" 7 times until you see a message saying you are a developer.
  2. Download a Mock Location App: Go to the Google Play Store and download an app like "Fake GPS location."
  3. Set the Mock Location App: Go to Settings > Developer Options. Scroll down to "Select mock location app" and choose the app you just downloaded.
  4. Set Your Fake Location: Open the Fake GPS app, move the pin to wherever you want to be in the world, and tap the play/start button. All apps on your phone will now think you are at that location.

How to Spoof GPS on iOS (iPhone/iPad)

Apple's iOS is highly restricted, making GPS spoofing much more difficult. There are no "mock location" settings you can easily toggle.

A Word of Warning

While faking your location can be fun or useful for testing, many apps (especially games like Pokémon GO or ride-sharing apps) actively detect and ban users who spoof their location. Use these tools responsibly.
